Part 1 Review:
In Open Wide, Melissa relates with me in such a way that I never thought anyone else would be able to relate to me. I’ve always had a hard time opening up to anyone about this topic, even my very well-trusted and loving therapist I have known for 7 years. Why is it so hard for me to open up about this, because for one I don’t know how to or even where to start, or really why I do what I’ve always done. Over the years it’s just gotten comfortable for me.
I will 100% admit that I do it and I know it’s one thing I am good at, but I am not proud of it and that’s running away. Anytime something would get hard or uncomfortable I would run away. Anytime I have been scared in my life, career, or relationships I would run away. Even things I didn’t even want to deal with anymore I would run away.
Running away was my defense mechanism, rather than dealing with my feelings, emotions, problems, or relationships I would run from them. It felt comfortable and the only way I knew how to make things go away was to run from them, avoid them, close off, shut down and pretend like they did not exist. As a child growing up I was never really opened up to having feelings or emotions. I feel like my parents tried to shelter and protect me from the reality of the world, but instead that closed me off to it.
Whenever someone close passed away as a child and even as an adult I was sheltered from it. I was never able to truly experience the feelings or emotions that came from death or loss.
In Open Wide, I love what Melissa says, “Relationships are our biggest mirror, our biggest teachers, and our biggest spiritual assignments… Looking, truly looking at our relationships is the fastest way to grow and evolve.”
I couldn’t agree with her more!
Part 2 Review:
Melissa shares how important it is to listen to your intuition. Stay true to who you are and don't ignore your truth.
Know what is important to you, write it out, align with it, and follow it with all of your heart and soul.
Loving Yourself
How can you expect people to love you if you can’t love yourself? The real truth is that many people learn to love themselves by first being loved by another. If you never had a loving family, it's more difficult to build healthy self-esteem.
Trying to love yourself usually is an experience that puts you on a path to finding out what your true purpose is in life.
I have struggled with this for a very long time. Learning how to love yourself is a process. A process that Melissa walks you through in her book, Open Wide.
Relationships
Melissa says, "Open Wide to all possibilities. It's easy to get caught up in a wish list of what you want in a future partner... Getting this fixated in detail on jobs or looks might be shutting you off from being with a truly amazing person."
I think we all have had some unrealistic ideas of what we want in a future partner. It's easy to dream about the perfect relationship or partner, but when we are actually forced to try and live out that reality, we are sadly woken up.
Finding Your Soulmate
I love Melissa’s advice on soulmates because it is real, raw, and true. She throws the social norms based around soulmates and rule book out the damn window! Which is very refreshing! Melissa states “Only you get to choose who your soulmate is.”
Find out what you truly desire in your relationship and what are the most important characteristics that you want to have in a partner.
The Perfect Breakup Script
I suck, absolutely suck at breaking up with people or letting them go… It actually gives me anxiety and I usually avoid having that conversation like the plague.
Breaking up with ease and grace is possible. Melissa writes out a very simplistic script for us to have that conversation of ending a relationship. She encourages us to get into the right mental space first before having this conversation. Melissa reminds us to make sure we practice and use “CCC” crystal clear communication during this process. She even encourages us to thank our former partners. To thank them for the good times, the lessons, and memories from your relationship. It is also ok, to let go and move forward. Make sure to also feel everything that comes up for you after the breakup; anger, frustration, sadness, or whatever it is. Allow yourself to feel it and then let it go.
You get to choose your breakup experience.
Part 3 Review:
In part 3 Melissa takes a very open 21st-century approach when talking about all things sex. She covers everything from sex, sexuality, orgasms, pleasure sticks, and much more!
To be completely honest, I have never even heard of a Jade Egg or even know what that was.
I found a lot of the information that Melissa shared and talked about in these chapters very insightful. It’s interesting because not a lot of people feel completely comfortable to open and talking about sex.
Even though I’m sure there are women out there that might feel uncomfortable about some of these topics, that’s ok. I would still recommend just being open to hearing what she has to say because I guarantee you will learn something new that you didn’t before!
I took away things about my feminine health that I never knew before. I had no idea how toxic tampons and personal lubricants are for our bodies. After reading this, I had to look it up and I will now be using natural or organic products for my womanly parts.
Open Wide, and just take all of the information she shares.
P.S. If you love an Australian accent as much as I do you need to listen to her audible version of her books!
Hearing the sincerity of Melissa's voice brought a feeling of peace and calmness throughout her audible version of Open Wide.
"There is always a different sort of connection when you can actually hear the words spoken and read by the author."
After reading Open Wide, I subscribed to Melissa's podcast PurposeFUL on audible and listened to all 10 episodes in one go! Her work is truly inspiring and remarkable - I will forever be a lifetime fan of her work.
Go check it out!
